To comment or not to comment.

Okay, so with all the goodreads reviewer/author hullabaloo lately (if you have no idea what I'm talking about that's good. Stay that way. :) ), I've learned some important lessons.

Most of which I already knew, but it only reinforced, so...YAY for learning! :) But now I find myself in a bit of a quandry. As many of you know, I've just revealed my gorgeous cover and a few of you have already put RENEGADE for your WoW Wendnesdays, which tickles me pink. That's not my dilema--I love everyone of you who have said you wanted to read my book, or added it to goodreads, or...well, the list goes on and on really. What my question is, is this: What am I supposed to do when someone links me to their post mentioning my book--whether that post be a review, a WoW Wednesday, a cover love post, or whatever, what do I do?

We've learned from the goodreads drama that authors should never, never, never, never respond to reviews (whether they're good OR bad), but what if the person WANTS you to read it? What if it's not a review?

I've seen some authors who retweet every good mention or post or whathaveyou, but I've heard that's a no-no. That you shouldn't retweet that praise yourself, that you should let others do that for you. But I'm wondering, if because of these other authors doing that, if readers expect that and when it doesn't happen, if they feel they're being snubbed (Which is the LAST thing I want to do.)

And if someone truly wants me to know they mentioned my book (they tweeted me the link after all) I want to acknowledge them. Just because they took the time to let me know what they did. Plus I have a personal policy to answer EVERY blog/FB comment, tweet mention, email, etc. I WANT to have that personal connection with my readers.

But I also understand some readers may not want that personal connection. They may see my re-tweet of their post or whathaveyou as intrusive or bothersome. Maybe they even feel like I'm reading over their shoulder. And I definitely don't want that.

So where is the happy middle-ground here? How do I respond to the people who've pointed me to their post? And while I haven't come across this yet, I'm sure I will. What if that post isn't a good one? Do I acknowledge it with a thank you? Or leave it be?

Whoot! Today is THE DAY! Eee! I can't believe it's finally come. I really do feel like a kid waiting for Christmas. LOL.

Okay, like all scavenger hunts there's a start...and an end. Today is the start. Right HERE. All you have to do today and throughout the weekend is visit each of the below blogs at the correct times and look at each of the cover puzzle pieces. After you manage to tear your eyes from all the pretty [ ;) ]and then collect the magic word at each blog, then you'll have all weekend to try and put them together into the correct tagline.

On Monday visit the blogs that are hosting the FULL cover reveal and stare at THAT pretty. Once you manage to stop starting at that one [ :) ] then follow the link to the contest form and fill it out. You'll get an extra point if you can put together the tagline correctly.

Yes, you saw that right. I have a cover and it is GORGEOUS! I love it with every beat of my heart. But no, I'm not going to share it yet. :( And I know I'm teasing you a little with this post, but how else am I going to get the word out, right? LOL.

Anyway, I've been lucky enough to have the help of some absolutely fantastic blogs and I'll be working with them to do a scavenger hunt puzzle for the reveal. In exactly one week, starting on Friday, January 20th a group of blogs will be posting a puzzle piece of the cover along with a word from the tagline. Then on Monday, January 23rd, a few other blogs will be posting the ENTIRE cover and hosting a contest to win an ARC of RENEGADE (when available) and a YA book of their choice from the book depository. (Might I recommend one of the fabulous apocalypsies that are already out--or I can even pre-order the one you're most looking forward to.)

Young Adult Fantasy and Faeries Giveaway Hop

This year will be really exciting for me, and I thought I'd pass along some of that excitement by participating in the Young Adult Faeries and Fantasy Giveaway Hop hosted by I Am a Reader, Not A Writer and vvb32reads.

Since this giveaway is all about the faeries and fantasies I didn't want to giveaway a book people already have, so I thought why not let y'all pick?

Mid-winter's Eve Giveaway Hop

I first saw this book when I joined the Apocalypsies and I was fascinated by the cover. I immediately went to see what it was about, because I just couldn't figure out what the book was supposed to be about from that cover (it's perfect, though, right?) The description had me at hello and now I can't wait to read it.

Sometimes there's no easy way out.

Victor hates his life. He has no friends, gets beaten up at school, and his parents are always criticizing him. Tired of feeling miserable, Victor takes a bottle of his mother's sleeping pills—only to wake up in the hospital.

Bull is angry, and takes all of his rage out on Victor. That makes him feel better, at least a little. But it doesn't stop Bull's grandfather from getting drunk and hitting him. So Bull tries to defend himself with a loaded gun.

When Victor and Bull end up as roommates in the same psych ward, there's no way to escape each other or their problems. Which means things are going to get worse—much worse—before they get better….

Torment Tuesday: Revising the suck

Yeah...not the most uplifting title, is it? But that's the way I feel this morning. I really don't know what else to write about, so I hope you'll bear with me as I chatter on and on. J/K.

Anyway, I'm deep into revisions and seriously I feel as tormented as my characters. I'm at that lovely stage where I just want to throw my computer at the wall because I'm pretty sure I've just written 86k words of crap.

Sure my CPs don't agree, but I'm looking at the words I've written and wondering how I ever thought that this train wreck of a MS was a good idea.

Okay, that's probably a bit harsh. I've got some great things in there AND it's really technically only the first draft, but I hate it. Hate it. Hate it. Hate it.

So, you're asking, if you hate it so much, why don't you delete and start over?

Well, you see, that's how I ALWAYS feel at this stage. I've done it with absolutely every book I've ever written. And I know, deep down, it's not nearly as bad as I think it is, but it's like looking in a mirror and seeing yourself as fatter than you really are.

No matter how often someone tells you, you look great, you don't really believe it. It's the same with my MSs for me. No matter how often my CPs tell me it's great, I only see it's flaws.

Only after revising it to the point that I feel if I fix even one more thing I'll vomit, do I consider the fact that it may be all right. And then, that's when I send it to my agent. So she can help me make it even better, and then to my editor, who will hopefully love it and make it practically perfect.

So, question for you? How long does it take you fall back in love with your manuscripts? Do you ever get to that point?

Another one of my friends, Leah Crichton, had her book birthday recently. Yesterday in fact and I'm pleased to be able to spread the word.

There's been a lot of ups and downs with this book, but I was lucky enough to read an earlier version of it and it was great. I can't wait for my copy to come so that I can see how great it is now.

About the author:

Leah Crichton began writing at the tender age of five. She was fortunate enough to grow up with two teachers for parents, so she's used to being constructively criticized which has some serious perks when you live in the real world. Her father is also an author and the rest as they say, is history.

She lives in organized chaos in Calgary, Alberta, Canada with her husband and children, who surprisingly not only put up with her but maybe even love her. She has a few obsessions including but not limited to: coffee, writing, reading, photography, lip gloss, vacations and music. She works full time in a very technical job, so she welcomes the voices inside her head which are fighting to get out and puts them on paper. Sometimes they turn into decent stories. Other times, people just assume she's crazy.

Amaranthine is the first novel she ever finished. The feeling of reaching the end sparked a desire to do it again, so she's currently working on her second novel (the first in a series). What happens next remains a mystery.

Monday Musings: Crit Partners

I've talked here before about crit partners, but in the last two years that I've been serious about writing, I've never been as thankful for my crit partners as I am today. Or this year, really.

I've been blessed with having found AMAZING crit partners. We don't always agree on things. I have one who HATES (maybe that's too strong of a word, I'm sure she'll correct me. :P) when my heros carry my heroines around. I like it. Not ALL the time, but when I think there's a need for it. Another of my crit partners is more on the innocent side and doesn't like my more steamy scenes. And yet another loves both of those things, but hates other things.

The thing about them all is they all have their strengths. The one that hates all the sappy, sappy stuff, is the one that knows me the best. I can talk to her about any little idea that pops into my head. And not only does me encourage me to try it, she'll run with it and come up with something even zanier! Also, she's not afraid to tell me when something isn't working. We're both so honest with each other that sometimes, I'm TERRIFIED of opening my crit notes from her.

Like last night I got my latest notes from her, knowing she would "Tear me up" (I specifically asked her to and she did!) But I also knew that I would probably agree with all of the things she saw as problematic. I was right. In fact, if I thought about it, we've been together so long I could have easily pointed out the areas that she had a problem with.

And she's awesome because she doesn't mind spending 2 hours on skype with me while I whine and hem and haw in her ear about the things she doesn't like. Especially those heros of mine. ; ) (LOVE YA!)

Anyway, moving on. Another is excellent at pointing out movements and is PERFECT for helping me stage my characters. She'll point out each time she can't get a feeling of where my characters are or how they're moving.

But the thing is, for me crit partners are essential. They help me brainstorm. They tell me when things aren't working, and they encourage me when I feel like my book is crap and it's "all wrong. Every thing is WRONG!" LOL. And yes, sometimes the only nice thing they have to say about a story is what's up in the little picture, but then that's what they're there for, right?

But my crit partners are more than that. They've become friends. In some cases, my best friends and I seriously don't know what I'd do without them. Even when I want to pull my hair out and go, as I'm saying, "But now I've got to change EVERYTHING!"

Book Review: DESTINED

Of course I have to give this book 5 stars because Jessie is awesomesauce, but seriously, you don't have to believe me. I highly suggest you read it for yourself, because I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

DESTINED is a book that has something for everyone packaged into a delightfully sweet historical romance/mythology retelling that will have you turning pages until the end and leave you wanting more.

At first I was concerned about Psyche's modern voice in an ancient Greecian setting (as it was difficult to tell when the story was taking place) and some of the freedoms and liberties she had that a girl (especially a princess) would not have had during that time period. However, I think it might really help teens who wouldn't normally pick up this type of book really get interested in a historical setting. One of my own personal favorite time periods, BTW.

Psyche is an awesome strong, female character who was well-developed and had a great character arc through out the novel. I love how Jessie used the deepness of the 1st person POV to really show us what and how Psyche was feeling, which was a great foil for Eros' limited 3rd POV.

Eros was the typical alpha male romance hero with a twist. He was a god. And not just any god, but Cupid, the god of love, whose Mother happens to be Aphrodite. Which, of course, left many interesting dilemas for poor Psyche.

All in all I really enjoyed reading this book (I read it in less than 24 hours) and I highly recommend it.

Monday Musings: A rant--don't engage the crazy

I normally try to look at the bright side of things. I'm not an optimistic person by nature, but I usually try very hard to look at the glass as half-full. The "there's always a reason for everything" thing. And I usually succeed. It may take me a minute or ten, but I eventually figure it out and go on my happy way, but this time I can't. I'm pissed. Yeah, I said it. I usually don't like swearing on my blogs and really that's not all that bad, but...it's the only word that I think really describes exactly how I feel at this minute.

I know by holding onto the anger I'm only making things worse. I know by being angry still I'm letting her "win," but damn it, it bugs me. Well, obviously, it does more than bug me.

And now you're going "well, what the hell is it all ready?" It's road rage, people. Don't give in to it. Seriously. It's dumb. It's stupid. And it causes you to do idiotic things. Why am I talking about it? Because of an incident that happened on Saturday to me.

I was driving behind my husband (who finally got his motorcycle back after his accident) and we needed to meet my MIL at her work to pick up my daughter. So, I'm following behind him, keeping an eye on him and the bike and everything else, and we merge into the exit lane off the highway.

Now this particular exit can be fairly tricky to manuever, but I've done it a thousand times. I flick on my blinker, glance behind me and check all my mirrors (seriously, if you don't do all that, you'll hit someone, it's ridiculous how horrible this exit is.) and see I have room to merge over.

The minute I do, the lady I merged in front of gets pissed (for what reason I have no idea because there was more than a car length between us) she flashes her lights and blares her horn.

Me? I ignore it. Although I'll admit I was a little frustrated. I mean, really? Was all that necessary? But that wasn't even the worst of it. This is where the road rage comes in. She decides that since I've ignored her, obviously she needs to get my attention. She roars up around me and then pulls up next to me --in my lane! --And proceeds to yell at me through her open window and my closed one.

My heart is seriously pumping some blood now and I'm a bit shaky (because I HATE confrontations. Seriously hate them.), but I ignore her, figuring she'll just go away when the light turns green. She didn't. In fact, she follows me THISCLOSE to my back bumper until the next light, in which she speeds up to get in front of me and then SLAMS ON HER BRAKES, so I have to slam on mine in order to avoid hitting her.

Then she flings open her door and continues to YELL AT ME again through my closed windows. I honestly have no friggin clue what she was saying. Of course, now I'm pissed. She almost made me HIT HER! WTH?! So I flick her off (not my brightest idea) and stick out my tongue at her.

This, of course, only makes her more angry and she slams back into her car and THROWS IT IN REVERSE! Uh, yeah, I had to do the same, so I decide to just pull into the second turn lane next to me. To get away from Psycho bitch, as I've now dubbed her in my head.

Of course, she gets in front of me again, but this time blocks BOTH turn lanes. This is the point that I SHOULD have called the police. I should have just stayed there and waited for them to come and arrest her, but I was worried about my husband and I didn't know where my MIL worked, (also, I was a little scared at this point. I didn't want to be alone with this woman and for some reason this side street was practically empty--probably because it's a business complex and it was Saturday, but anyway, I digress) So, I speed around her and try to catch up with my husband who is blissfully unaware any of this is happening.

She continues to follow me, all the way into the parking lot where my husband and MIL are. She speeds around me and blocks all of our vehicles in, then opens her window and starts screaming again.

At this point I've had enough, so I get out of the car and storm to the halfway point between our cars (which happened to be next to my husband) and I say, "WTF is your problem?!" I think I may have called her a bitch, too.

She starts screaming that I cut her off and almost killed her three babies in the back seat.

At this point I'm completely dumbfounded. 1) there was plenty of room and we weren't even going more than 10 MPH 2) SHE did much more harm to those kids by pulling her stupid stunts than I ever did, even if I'd done what she thought I did, and 3) she's spitting and cursing and screaming like a mad woman while her kids are in the car? How is THAT not damaging to them?

Then she really pisses me off by calling me a fat ass. Okay, I know I'm fat. I get it. It's a little impossible not to realize this fact when I put on my jeans every morning, but really, you followed me all the way from the highway to my MILs job, cutting me off and driving like a lunatic to call me a fat ass? Really?

But, at this point I don't much care, so I spout off some not nice things. Something along the lines of calling her a whore and whatnot. Then she tells me I couldn't even get laid if I wanted to. Obviously the hot man next to me, with his arm around me didn't make it clear that that's not a problem, but I scream out that at least I know how to close my legs. Mature, right?! *eye roll*

Yeah, not my most shining moment, I know. After a few more moments of her screaming at me and me now ignoring it because my husband is smarter than me and tells me to "shut up. You're only making it worse", she leaves.

I have to sit down because now I'm sick to my stomach and shaking so hard I can't stand. Then I start to think, because obviously my brain stopped working a while ago. That she was really dumb. And I don't mean just the road rage.

She had NO IDEA who was driving my big ass truck with tinted windows. It could have been anyone. I could have had a gun. I could have been a rapist for crying out loud. It's not like we were in an area that had a lot of people.

Here she is, so pissed because she thought I did her wrong (and in her eyes maybe I did get too close. According to me and the law--which I looked up afterward--I didn't, but who knows what she thought), she was willing to risk not only her life, but that of her three kids.

Something tells me she wasn't all that worried about those kids and it was just an excuse, but really? And yeah, now I'm mad all over again. Not because of what she did to me--which was dumb--but because of what she did to her kids! And that, in my mind, borders on abuse or neglect or something. She didn't once think of those kids when she was doing all that. Otherwise she wouldn't have done it!

But that's not even the end, she waited until we all left the parking lot. My MIL decided that it would be better to take my DD home in her car, in case crazy lady hadn't given up. SHe felt it would be safer.

I agreed, which is a good thing I did, because she--crazy lady-- of course did wait for me. But she went after my husband instead. Remember he's on a motorcycle. So I'm freaking out she's going to get him killed. So I try getting her attention so she'll follow me again and try going a different way home.

But she doesn't follow me, she only continues to follow DH. My MIL (obviously smarter than I, calls 9-1-1 and reports her) and I'm panicked the whole way home something happened to him, but he's home when I get there and gives me this HUGE hug, which makes me burst into tears (because I LITERALLY cry over EVERYTHING).

She apparently decided he wasn't worth it and left him alone after a mile or two. Maybe she came back to her senses? Maybe she realized we called 9-1-1. I don't know. I guess it doesn't matter.

But, yeah, I'm still pissed, and yeah, it's a bit about what she did to me, but it's mostly because of her kids. I sincerely hope this was a one shot deal and it'll never happen again, but I'm seriously concerned for those kids, because next time she does that, she may not be so lucky.

Of course, I feel pretty stupid, too. I should never have "engaged the crazy." I should have continued to ignore her. I should've called 9-1-1 in the beginning. In fact, there are many things I should have done, but didn't. And that's just another reason we should learn to curb our anger, because it makes us temporarily stupid.

I can't wait to read this because (besides the fact that we share a name.) well, the description made it sound great. I'm not so keen on the cover, but it IS interesting, so there is that. I'm just not sure what it has to do with the book...Anyway, it sounds like it could be a really great contemporary romance and I've been itching to read a good one for awhile.

Reading to our kids

Okay I had no idea what I was going to write about today, then I read this article. My jaw literally dropped. I couldn't believe this woman was complaining about reading to her kids. Especially after saying how much she remembered enjoying reading CHARLOTTE'S WEB with her own mother. My first thought was, WTF?!

Reading to my kids is singularly the most enjoyable part of my day. I get to share with them the discovery of new characters, far away places, and most importantly my love of reading.

Sure, we've run into our fair share of issues. there are days I'm just too tired to read and sometimes I do skip pages. I don't exactly like some of the books they want me to read, and I DO get tired of reading the same books over and over, but for the most part, it's enjoyable. I get to spend quality time with them. I get to see their eyes light up when I pull that worn out copy of Sleeping Beauty (for my daughter) or Bob the Builder (that's when my son was little--he doesn't want me to read with him anymore. :()

And that brings up another thing, this age doesn't last forever. They won't want you to read with them forever. Pretty soon, reading time will be spent playing video games, or reading quietly on their own. Talking to friends. Whatever it is they enjoy instead.

So I'm going to cherish these moments for as long as they last. And I'm going to read to my kids, doing bad character voices, and puppet shows, and giggling at all the silly stuff until my kids beg me to stop.

And person who wrote that article, honestly, you should be ashamed of yourself. (Sorry, I know that's harsh, but it's how I feel.) I feel sorry for your kids. If reading to them is such a chore, why not just not do it? Then maybe you won't ruin reading for your kids.

Celebrate the small stuff

So these last couple of months, I've just been bidding my time, waiting for things to finalize and I'm glad to say that everything has indeed been finalized. As of last Friday!! Whoot!

I'm happily working on the 2nd of my 3-book deal and I can finally stop to rejoice in what is the biggest accomplishment of my life so far. It's also one of the happiest. Third only to getting married and having my kids.

Why am I only rejoicing now? And not back when it happened? Well, because I'm HUGELY superstitious. I was afraid to celebrate anything until it was final. So, since the ink has dried and I feel reasonably assured I'm not going to screw things up by doing a happy dance, that's what I'm doing.

I'm now going to celebrate all the small(-ish) but happy things that have happened in the last two years since I started on my publication journey.

It also made me think of all the bumps and potential roadblocks I've hit along the way. And I just want to say to all you aspiring writers out there, the only thing that separates a published author from an aspiring one is persistence. Never give up. Even if you have to take a break now and then to recharge your batteries, keep going for the long haul. It's WAY worth it.

So, to help some of you on your way, and to give me time to think of an AWESOME contest to celebrate, I'm doing a tiny one. I'm celebrating my two year blogging anniversary this month. It also happens to be one of my favorite months of the year, so I'm in an especially good mood. Which, in my mind, translates to lots of giveaways.

I'll be giving away query crits, partial crits, and books. Lots and lots of books. :) And all this will culminate into the awesomest of awesome contests (to celebrate the awesomest of awesome things--the finalization of my book deal).

So, we'll start small today and I'll offer a query and first chapter crit.

The power of words

Remember when your mother used to teach you the old saying, "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me."? And remember when you realized that wasn't exactly true and words hurt almost as much as sticks and stones?

I talked over at the BNW blog yesterday about how I alwayswanted to be a writer and it started with my 6^th grade teacher. And then I remembered a story from afriend, who had a teacher do the exact opposite and she QUIT writing becauseher teacher was so awful to her. Which of course, got me thinking. No surprise there, every thing always gets me thinking. Pretty annoying for the hubby and kidswhen I start asking questions out of the blue, but anyway. That got me thinking about how muchinfluence people in authority have over others.

I’m not just talking about parents and teachers over kids,but bosses and politicians, etc over adults. Even friends and partners,neighbors. Anyone really. And howeasy it is for one person to say something, which could mean absolutely nothingto them, but destroy an entire person’s career, or life, or whatever.

That’s the power of words. As a writer I know words can be powerful, but I never satdown to think exactly what power they wield. One simple thank you can completely metamorphisize someone’sentire day, maybe even their life. And one ill-thought choice of words can cause untold amounts of pain.

Words have started wars and ended them. They’ve caused andcured illnesses. They are thewindows letting people see who and what we are and stand for. And for the mostpart, we (as humans) spend more time brushing our hair, then we do in thinkingabout what we say.

But I have to wonder what a world we would live in, if wejust took a few minutes to think about what we say before we say them.

I'M PREGNANT (with a book)! or How book publishing is like expecting a baby.

Okay, so I was teasing a few weeks back on twitter about howme waiting for my book to be out on shelves was like being pregnant. And I kept coming up with thesedifferent comparisions. Then Istarted getting comparasions from former L & D nurse and fab crit partnerLiz Czukas, and we both decided that I should totally do a blogpost detailingthe entire process from writing the draft to book birthday. So here it is. I hope you enjoy it, or a least gigglea little.

Querying is like on-line dating. You put up your best photo and make yourself sound 100 timesbetter than you really are out there—that would be the query letter, minus thephoto (don’t send photos of yourselves to agents, peeps. That’s all kinds of creepy. :P).

You get a nibble and go on that first date. That’s a partial request. Sometimes the date is a total failureand you never want to see each other again. That’s a rejection. You go back and forth with updating your profile page and going out onfirst dates. Of course, that wouldbe revising that query and manuscript until it shines and looks NOTHING like itdid in the beginning.

FINALLY you meet someone who’s pretty awesome and you go onmore dates and maybe even become exclusive (Whee!). That’sa full request! Yay! (Keep in mindwhile some agents do ask for exclusives, it is not a good idea for an author togrant it—IMO. In dating, yeah,might want to consider that exclusive. :P) Sometimes, again, you realize thatthe person you’re with just isn’t right for you and you break up. There’s that rejection again. (BOO!)

But then, the unexpected but completely awesomest thinghappens. He/She asks you to marryhim/her! OMG! That is, of course, the offer. You accept and say I do (There’s no engagementperiod here folks. We’re talking running straight to the courthouse and gettingmarried before that boy/girl can change their mind. :P). That’s signing the contract.

Now you get to have fun (I’m not going into details aboutwhat I mean here, I’m pretty sure every one can figure this part out bythemselves.*Boom, chicka wow wow*) and you go out on submission.

After possibly a few negative pregnancy tests, you finallyget an offer from an editor and accept. That’s TOTALLY the postive and doctor confirmed pregnancy test.

Then is the hard work, you revise, revise, and revise. That’s all those monthly visits to theOB.

Then, OMG, you get a COVER! Wow! That’s theultrasound. And like any proudparent you show it off to anyone you can trap for 5 seconds. All during this time, people are askingwhen you’re due, and how much longer. And are you excited? What’s it’s name?

Then, debut day/labor. Even though you think you’ve beenready for months, you wonder if you haven’t just lost your mind. You panic and tell people you’vechanged your mind. You don’t really want to be a mom (author) any more, butit’s too late, because before you know you’ve got a beautiful bouncing baby(book) in your hot little hands and you’ve forgotten how much hard work it tookyou to get there and you can’t wait to do it all again. Because the book (baby) is perfect, andyou love it so much!

Okay, I’m guessing on some of these, because I haven’tgotten that far with my book yet. I’m still happily at the OB visits and waiting for the happy day I’llget my sonogram. LOL. HOWEVER, I’ve had 2 babies, so I’mpretty sure I know what happens on that side. LOL.

Tor Tuesday: Anna Dressed In Blood Contest

Hi all! I've decided to start something new today. I'm calling it Tor Tuesday. It's something that's been simmering in my brain and I finally decided to go for it. Once a month or so (maybe more depending one when I feel like it :P) I'm going to feature a Tor book I've read and loved (YA or otherwise). Sometimes there'll be contests--like today--other times author interviews, book spotlights, etc, depending on what I decide to cook up.

Since today is the release day for Kendare Blake's ANNA DRESSED IN BLOOD, I'm giving away a copy to one commenter. Amongst her likes are Greek Mythology, rare red meat and veganism. I love dystopians (obviously), but this was the only one that got my blood boiling a mere 5 pages into the MS. I was at my daughter's pediatrician raving to the doctor about how AWFUL the government in this society is, which sparked a 20-minute conversation about the possibility of it happening to us in real life. I did not like thinking of that possibility, but that's the point of books, to make it easier to talk about an uncomfortable subject.

Monday Musings: Location, location, location

Have you ever gone somewhere you’ve been before, but seen itin a completely different way? This happened with me this weekend. We went to one of the prettiest spots in Orlando, LeuGardens and, while I’d been there before (in fact Evie’s gardens are based onthe Rose Garden there--see below pic), I saw it in a completely different way.

It was not just a pretty place with beautiful flowers andlakes, it was the setting for a historical novel that’s been sitting in theback of mind for a while.

I could see the “ghosts” of my characters walking throughthe house that’s on the property. While the tour guide was spouting historical facts of the house, I wasseeing my characters walking through it, stopping to point out several thingsthey thought to be important, and telling me their story.

Then while I was walking over the pathways of the “gardens,”I saw my post-apocalyptic surface world. Gavin’s world. Or at leastpart of it. It wasn’t the clean,pretty, organized gardens that were really there. My mind was showing me what it could look like after 50-60years of neglect.

My favorite was the clock. While it wasn’t in bloom for thistrip, can you imagine seeing that in some near future and trying to figure outwhy it was there?

It’s really putme in Gavin’s head and I’ll be able to use that when I go back in forrevisions.

I can’t wait to go back and do more “research” and see whatmy mind shows me next.

Monday Musings: Author photos

So, while I wait for my editor to read over my latest revisionsto RENEGADE, I’ve been putting a lot of thought into other things. Other things being my website andauthor photos.

I’ve pretty much decided on the designer for the website, sothat’s out of my hands until I get my cover, so she can design an awesome sitethat matches it. Which leaves myauthor photo.

And I think I’ve chosen the photographer, but that leaves somany other things to think about. Location, wardrobe, style. It makes my brain hurt. LOL. Not to mention all thethings I DON’T know about taking professional photos.

My husband says to be myself, which is sound advice, butthen leaves me taking the picture in torn jeans or yoga pants and a rattyt-shirt, with my hair in braids, and no make-up. Another friend said maybe I should think about dressing upin a fancy dress and all the things that go along with it, like my MC doesthroughout her story. Not a badidea either, but then it’s not really “me” at all.

So that leaves me with my best bet, which is somewhere inthe middle. And I have no ideawhere that is. I want it to beperfect. I want to look beautiful,but I have no idea how to make that happen. And a photographer can only do so much. :P

Friday News

So this week has been very strange! I've been down and out with a sinus infection turned ear infection turned ruptured ear drum. Yep, you read that right. Somehow during the night, I had so much fluid build up behind my ear drum that it ruptured it. Not exactly comfortable. It's also made it difficult to do anything but lay down because my head spins every time I move. It's kinda like when you were a kid and spun around in circles with your arms out, then fell to the ground and watched the clouds spin.

So, that started off my week, but then I started getting good news! I found out that one of my newest crit partners has gotten herself an agent! Isn't that awesome news! Please go over there and congratulate her. She really does deserve it. :)

I also got more good news that I can't talk about quite yet, but as soon as I can, I'll post it.

I've also gotten the go ahead from my editor (I don't think saying that will ever get old. LOL.) to start working on Book 2 of the Elysium Chronicles, tentatively titled REBEL. So as soon as I can spend more than 5 minutes at the computer, I'll start writing it. So excited to dive back into this world.

However, the best news I've gotten this week, I stumbled upon purely accidentally. I was looking up something about RT and this post showed up. Go on and read the whole thing, but pay particular attention to the second paragraph. Really, go on, I'll wait right here. (*Smiles like an idiot*)

Monday Musings: What I think about crits.

I’ve been neglectful of my little blog lately. :( I’m so sorry, guys. I hope to keep itup from here on out, but I don’t think I’ll be doing daily posts. I’ll try to blog at least twice a week,but they’ll be probably be pretty random on the actual days I post during theweek.

I wanted to talk today about crits and expectations withthose crits. I’ve been doing (receiving and giving) them since I startedwriting and I spend a lot of time on them. I want the person I’m criting to not only have a great MS,but to learn something in the process. Something they can take with them ontheir next round of edits and future manuscripts. Granted I know, especially with beginning writers, that Ican’t teach them everything I know (probably not even most) in just one crit,but I do what I can.

I’m also sure that most people who crit are pretty much thesame. We’re not out to makeourselves feel better by tearing your (using the all encompassing you and thisis pointing at no one in particular) stuff apart. We’re not trying to chase you away from writing so wecan take your spot. And we’redefinitely not jealous (in the bad way) of you. We want to help you get better. We want to help you find that agent or editor and when it iswe can say with pride that we’re proud of you and excited for you and that weknew you when. LOL.

I’ve also been on the other side where even the tiniestconstructive criticism felt like an arrow to the soul. Where it’s sometimes hard to see pastall the red to see the intention behind why a critter has said something. But, in order to keep going--to keepimproving—we need to get passed that. We need to learn that we are not our writing. The critter isn’tattacking us personally; they’re not even attacking our manuscript. They’re trying to help us improve.

Even if all you see is criticism on the page and the critterhasn’t taken the time to tell you what they’ve liked, it’s not because theywant to make you feel bad. Take some time to let it sit. A few days, maybe evenweeks before you go back and re-read the crit. Try looking at the things theydidn’t say anything about. Theymore than likely liked the parts that aren’t marked up, and there’s probablymore white than red, even if it doesn’t appear so. Take a look at what they’ve said didn’t work for them. Then ask yourself these questions. Do you agree? Why or why not? Have others said the same? Even if you don’t want to change it, what would you do to fix it andwould it make the story better?

Another problem I’ve seen is people taking everyone’s advice. Someone says do this and they do it,but don’t really think about whether or not they agree. Whether it works for the story or not. Whether or not it really should be changed.

Really think about your crits. People put a lot of time into critting it and you shouldtake as much, if not more, time working with the notes.

One last thing I want to add is make sure the person (orpeople) you are working with are the right ones for you and your story. Somepeople crit very harshly, and are very Simon Cowell-ish. Some just say they love your work andmove on. Personally, I’m a littlein-between and that’s how I want to be critted. And that’s something you have to think about when workingwith someone new. How do theycrit? Can you live with it? Can you handle it?

There was a person who was doing crits a month or two back aspart of their book deal news (UGH! I can’t remember who it was. If you all remember, please let me knowso I can link to it. Thx.) and ILOVED how they handled this problem. They set levels for people to choose from. It was something like you were a peach if you had arelatively thin skin and wanted a gentle critique. An apple if you can handle a fairly comprehensive crit, butcan still be bruised. And a coconut for people who can take a pretty toughcritique. I think all crittersshould probably ask this before they do critiques and if you are getting a critand the critter doesn’t ask what style you are, tell them. That way both of youcan back off if you don’t think you can work together.

It’s also probably not a good idea to work with someone whodoesn’t write in your genre. Certain things that aren’t okay in one genre are what make another workand vice versa. True that certain“rules” carry out through all genres, like grammar and spelling.Punctuation. However, things likesentence structure and tone, even POV can be completely different. Especially between adult (wheresentences are usually full and complete and the preferred POV is Third) andYoung adult (where you can get away with more sentence fragments and first POVis more prevalent.)

Anyway, that’s just my $.02. Feel free to salt to taste and ignore any advice you don’tagree with. :D

Melaia finds herself in the middle of a blood feud between two immortal brothers who destroyed the stairway to heaven, stranding angels in the earthly realm. When the feud turns violent and Melaia becomes a target, she finds refuge with a band of wandering angels attempting to restore the stairway. But the restoration is impossible without the repayment of an ancient debt, the “breath of angel, blood of man,” a payment that involves Melaia’s heart, soul, and destiny.

*Disclaimer: This book was not something I would have picked for myself. It’s high fantasy and no matter how hard I’ve tried, I can never get into these types of books. Therefore, this review is based on the quality of book and whether or not I thought someone who DOES read this genre would enjoy it.

REVIEW: This is another angel story in the deluge that’s hitting the market ( : P ), but it’s different as it’s not set in modern times. It takes place in a high fantasy medieval-type world. And while it’s the typical good vs evil storyline that’s common with angel books, it’s different in the fact that it’s not demons Melaia is “fighting” against. It’s two brothers who destroyed the stairway to heaven, which caused all the earthbound angels and the souls of people who’ve died to be trapped on Earth.

It starts with a stranger stumbling into a temple where the MC, Melaia, is a priestess training to be high priestess, but is a chantress now. She’s also a death-prophet, meaning she can see the spirit of someone dying trying to escape. She has a harp that she uses to help those who are dying to either pass on calmly or to stop them from dying.

Anyway, the man stumbles into the temple only to be attacked by a giant hawk and killed.

The hawk turns into a man and demands that Melaia tell the story of the two brothers and the stairway to heaven.

I don’t want to go to far into the story, and give too much away, but this was an enjoyable read, even for me, someone who doesn’t like high fantasy.

I did feel it dragged a bit and I found it hard to get into (this was not due to the story itself, but more to the point that I’ve found all high-fantasy dragging and hard to get into), but, once in the story, I wanted to know what was going to happen next and was driven to keep reading.

Characters: Melaia is a very enjoyable and strong heroine. I loved finding out who she really was and going on her adventures with her. There were times, however, that I felt she was too naïve for her own good. Granted, considering she’d been stuck inside a temple the whole of her life, this isn’t very surprising. And while I would have liked to have seen more of her obvious intelligence play a role with who she trusted and/or didn’t trust, I don’t suppose the story would have been the same. ; )

The other characters are just as well rounded and fascinating as Melaia. Especially Trevin, who I could never quite figure out.

I think my favorite part of the entire story was actually learning about the angelology. It was utterly fascinating and I couldn't get enough.

Cover: I really liked the cover, but I honestly feel a bit deceived by it. It isn’t the typical cover I’ve come to expect from high fantasy. However, knowing that, I have to give the marketing department kudos for coming up with a package that made me want to read it, where I probably would have passed.

All in all, I enjoyed reading this story and I’m glad I was able to put my prejudices against high fantasy away long enough to read it. It makes an excellent addition to my angel book collection.

So…do you guys remember a week or so ago, when I apologized for being so busy that I couldn’t post on my blog? And remember I said I had a good reason why and that I would tell you why as soon as I could? Well, that day is today!

Some of you may have already seen why, since Publisher’s Marketplace was a tiny bit excited by my news and decided to let everyone know on Saturday instead of today. ; ) So, I won’t make this all long and drawn out like I wanted to. :P

I SOLD MY DEBUT BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(*Pauses for applause, bows, blows kisses, wipes the tears from my eyes*)

Yeppers, THAT’S the reason. Pretty good reason, huh? :) I’ve been so busy with getting it ready for submission, the BEING on submission, then keeping my mouth shut AFTER I had an offer that I didn’t blog. Although, to be fair, the keeping my mouth shut after the offer didn’t really keep me too busy to blog. I was just terrified that I’d someone let something slip, I just kept my fingers busy with other things, namely plotting the next book in the series, because it’s a THREE BOOK DEAL!!!!!!!!

Wow! It's been a LONG time since I posted! I apologize for that. It's been crazy and unfortunately I don't think it's going to get better for awhile, so my posting is probably going to be a bit sporadic, but I'll try to be better. Topic this week: What book series are you most thankful for and why?

When I saw this prompt, I was like, “Oh boy! How do I choose?!” There wasn’t a way, so I used the ol’ stand-by…eenie, meenie, Minie, Mo. :D Of course, that didn’t work either. LOL. So, I picked two. Yes, I’m cheating. Kinda. ; ) The first is posted at the Oasis blog.

The second one I’m grateful for is the Twilight series. I know a lot of writer’s opinions on this series, but, honestly, it’s the reason I started writing seriously again. I wanted to do what she did. Not necessarily the movies, and the best-seller status(not that I WOULDN’T take all that. LOL.) but how she was able to create something new and fresh and make it her own. And not only do that, but making so many people--young and old alike—to fall in love with the story and the characters. Almost everywhere you turned people were reading or re-reading this story. I still don’t really know what it was about this story that made me want to keep reading, but there’s only been a few books since then that has inspired me that much.

Almost immediately I started writing an awful book about fairies. LOL. But Twilight gave me the courage to start writing again. And for that, I’m grateful.

Fantastic Friday: A request

We all have books we don't want, right? We bought them thinking they'd be great and they weren't. Or we got duplicates as a gift. Or even you've switched your entire library to an electronic one and have only ebooks now. What do you do with all those books you're not reading?

Well, I have one suggestion. A good friend of mine, Ebyss Writer, is asking for donated books to help with her students. She can explain it better than I can, so please read below.

I work with lower income and special students who want to expand their knowledge through a college education, but they are struggling with reading and/or mathematical concepts.

I would like to start a book drive. This way these students can improve their reading scores through practicing what we all love to do----read. As we know, the more you read, then the better you get. Plus, I hope to ignite in them a passion for exploring other worlds and other people through the written word.

I am asking for you to help me by donating books for this cause. Any MG or YA books would be greatly appreciated.

New or used--doesn’t matter. Fiction or non-fiction—doesn’t matter. The only thing I would like to do is keep the reading lvl at MG and YA.

What I plan to do when I get with these students is let them choose a book for them to keep. A lot of these students don’t read—at least by choice—and I’m hoping to expose them to great novels.

Monday Musings: Writer's Block

When I first started writing seriously I had an endless flow of ideas and I wrote them all down as quickly as possible, scoffing at writer’s block. But now I’ve noticed with the more I’ve learned the harder it is to actually write. I’ve still got the ideas, but it’s more difficult to get them down on paper.

I’m pretty sure it’s because I’m constantly trying to outdo myself. Not to mention I’m finding it more and more laborious to turn off that internal editor, to just “write the damn story” and fix it in subsequent drafts.

I’ve found that the harder I struggle, the worse it gets, so I’ve to just let the muse take me where it wants to go, when it wants me to go, instead of striving to wrestle it into a bottle to sprinkle it out over the course of the year.

It may mean frantic days and nights of dirty dishes and laundry piling up as I write feverishly, but my best stuff seems to come from those frenzied hours.

However, it doesn’t stop the worried thoughts of never writing again, so I want to know…what do you do to counteract writer’s block?

Tip Thursday: Tips from the Masters

Writing Tips

1. Cut the boring parts

I try to leave out the parts that people skip. ~Elmore Leonard

In other words, write what your readers want to read. If it's boring, cut it. That's why beta readers and CP are so important. They'll let you know if it's boring. If enough of them concur, then you might want to cut it.

2. Eliminate unnecessary words

Substitute “damn” every time you’re inclined to write “very;” your editor will delete it and the writing will be just as it should be. ~Mark Twain

Very, really, et cetera are qualifiers that don't make your writing stronger, they make them weaker. More often than not, you don't need them.

3. Write with passion

Fill your paper with the breathings of your heart. ~William Wordsworth

This is actually one of my favorite quotes and I don't think needs any more explanation.

4. Paint a picture

Don’t tell me the moon is shining; show me the glint of light on broken glass. ~Anton Chekhov

A perfect example of show vs tell. And also a great imagery tool.

5. Keep it simple

Vigorous writing is concise. ~William Strunk Jr.

This goes back to point one. If it's concise, it's probably not boring, since it's not probably not long and drawn out.

6. Do it for love

Write without pay until somebody offers to pay. ~Mark Twain

Another favorite quote of mine. Most writers couldn't stop writing if we wanted to, so I don't even think we should have this on the list. ;)

7. Learn to thrive on criticism

You have to know how to accept rejection and reject acceptance. ~Ray Bradbury

Writing feels like part of our soul by the time we're finished with it. So rejection can be hard and acceptance can sometimes be even harder. We just have to remember that our writing is not ourselves.

8. Write all the time

Quantity produces quality. If you only write a few things, you’re doomed. ~Ray Bradbury

The way you define yourself as a writer is that you write every time you have a free minute. If you didn’t behave that way you would never do anything. ~John Irving

9. Write what you know … or what you want to know

When a reader starts a book they want to be able to trust the author to tell a good story. If they can't trust you, they won't read. So make sure to get the simple things correct. :D

Writer's Wednesday: Book Review-Nightshade

REVIEW: This is another book I bought simply because of the cover. Honestly, I was over werewolves at this point, and I was pretty sure the only werewolf stories I wanted to read were the sequels to books I’d already read. However, I couldn’t resist having such a beautiful cover on my bookshelf (yes, I know. I’m shallow. J ) Anyway, since I bought it, I decided to give it a go. And I couldn’t put it down. I actually read it in one sitting, pretty much. Minus the obligatory self-care times. ; )

It started off with a bang and didn’t let up until it was over and had me begging for the next book! Every one knows, I love me a good love triangle and Andrea did a great job with this one. I’d compare it to the one in Personal Demons, except I know their crit. Partners so that’s probably why. LOL. While I do know I prefer Shay over Ren, it was a close call. They were just so hard to choose between. Especially toward the end when Ren started showing his true feelings and not that of what was expected of him.

It starts off with the suspense of Calla (the MC) running into a hiker in the woods who is badly injured. She’s in wolf form, so we aren’t sure what she’s going to do. Kill the hiker boy? Or save him. Since it’s already stated in the blurb what happens, I’ll say she saves him, and, in turn, shows him what she really is. She thinks it’ll end there, until he shows up at her school the next school day and is determined to get to know her better.

There was a great romantical element of the book and the characters couldn’t keep their hands off each other. While I do like those kinds of things, they have to be done well to be enjoyable. Most YA books steer clear of this, but not here and Andrea does an excellent job of showing it without overkilling it.

The only negative I saw was that Calla was supposed to be the alpha female, completely in control of her pack, but she didn’t seem that alpha until the end. She doesn’t know certain things about her brother and her best friend that I was sure she should have, being their alpha and all. And while she does stand up to Ren a few times, it felt like it was only for show. I understand that she was filled with indecision about certain things, but I felt I should see the alpha in other parts of her life and I didn’t really see it as much as I wanted (this is just a personal pref. BTW, others probably feel differently).

Otherwise, this is def. a must read for anyone, even those who don’t normally read the paranormal genre, but love a good romance. Though I will say, that if you don’t normally like romances, this probably isn’t the read for you. There is a LOT of it in here. And while I don’t think it took away from the book, I love me a good romance.

Characters: All of the characters were strongly developed and I enjoyed them very much. We’ll start with Calla, since she’s the MC. She had a lot of great qualities. She was strong, sweet, relatable and had a heart of gold. Shay was just awesome. Honestly I couldn’t find a single fault in him, though if I re-read it a few time, I probably could if I looked hard enough. LOL. And Ren? He was the perfect flawed alpha male. Loved every bit of him, too, even if I wanted to strangle him a few times. Like in the dance club. WTH was that Ren? :D

Cover: As I mentioned before this was the reason I purchased this book. It’s perfect and beautiful. Stunning really. With the frosted purple look and the girl that fits Calla perfectly. Plus the obviousness of the Calla lilies (my favorite flower, in case you were interested.), and the blood drops in them. Absolutely perfect!

Honestly, this was probably in my top ten books I read in 2010. I cannot rave about this book enough. So just go out and buy it, will ya? LOL. You won’t be disappointed.

Just like before, here's an excerpt from one of my newest favorite books. Since it's Valentine week, I've picked a section that is a little hot and heavy, and most def. swoon worthy. At least, in my opinion. So I don't give away which book this is from, I've gotten rid of all names and replaced them with pronouns. It won't detract from the scene. Promise. ; )

The kiss started slowly, a sweet, tentative searching. The soft touch of his mouth mesmerized me. I parted my lips for his, letting desire draw me down.

[His] kiss deepened; his hand ran along my back, tracing the length of my braid, sliding beneath my shirt to stroke my skin. I felt like I was drinking sunlight. My fingers moved from his chest to his neck and stroked the line of his jaw. I pressed into him, wanting to know more of the mysteries he pulled so easily from my body. More of this freedom, this wildness.

[He] grabbed my hips and in a swift motion turned us, pinning me to the floor. His hands moved beneath my shirt, his body pressing hard against mine. I could smell his rising desire mixing with my own, our feverish need infusing the air like lightning about to strike. Instead of being pulled down into him, I was rising up, legs wrapping around him. His fingers moved carefully, tracing my curves, lingering in places tht stole my breath, binding me to him and yet setting me free. My own gasp of pleasure against his mouth brought the world hurtling back.

The room spun as I pulled out of his embrace, stumbling toward the table. My heart rammed against my ribs, insistent and painful.

I can't do this, I can't. But I wanted to. More than anything.

Better late than never, right? My mind's been a bit out of it this week, but here's my contribution to the "That's YAmore blogfest" put on by my sister blog Oasis for YA. Please go check out the list to get your fill of the rest of the swoon worthy excerpts.

Though I am cheating a bit. This particular scene is from my finished work THE EXILED as I don't currently have a WIP that's to the point that I have a swoon-worthy scene. ; D.

He kissed his way up to my throat and my breath caught when instead of continuing up toward my mouth like I’d expected, he pushed my shirt up so it just barely covered my breasts and kissed down my stomach to the waistband of my jeans.
Then he moved so he kneeled over me. His legs straddled mine. He brought his lips back to just below my ear. My breath hitched again as my heart pounded like a jackhammer.
I twisted my neck to provide him better access, brought my hands to his waist and drug my hands up his chest under his shirt, feeling each quiver of muscle.
Slowly, almost painfully slow, he pressed himself to me and for the first time I knew what it was to have a man’s weight on me.
It was marvelous and I wanted more. I tugged on his shirt so I could pull it over his head. The minute he was free he pressed back down on me. His bare stomach pressed against mine.
Butterflies thrashed themselves stupid in my stomach, and I shook with nerves, but I wanted more. I’d never wanted anything more than I wanted him right then. Desire was so thick between us it wouldn’t have surprised me to see it.
Then just when I thought I couldn’t handle any more stimulation from his mouth on my skin he pressed it against mine.
My eyes flew open and then fluttered closed as I tasted him. His flavor was even sweeter than ambrosia. His scent, mixed with that of the grass and flowers, clouded my mind. My hands were everywhere until he finally trapped them in his and held them above my head.

Tip Thursday: Which vs that

I've been doing lots of crits lately and the most common thing I noticed was the misuse of which and that. Besides the whole telling vs showing thing that's common is most manuscripts. So here's the quick and dirty and below that will be links to more in depth help with which vs that.

Basically the choice between "that" and "which" is not a choice between formal and informal as most people see it. I most usually see "that" used instead of "which" because people feel it sounds too formal. That's not the case. "Which" is a non-defining relative pronoun. While "that" is a defining relative pronoun. Which basically means "that" introduces couses that identify a person or a thing. (e.g. "He had to choose between the ten girls that had been chosen for him.") While "which" is used to give a reason or add a new fact (e.g., "I always buy his books, which have influenced me greatly."). However, be careful, when used as a pronoun "which" must have a clear antecedent--a word, phrase, clause, or sentence to which another word refers (e.g. There was a conference in Vienna, which ended on December 13th.)

Writer's Wednesday: Book Review: Beastly

You think I’m talking fairy tales? No way. The place is New York City. The time is now. It’s no deformity, no disease. And I’ll stay this way forever – ruined – unless I can break the spell.

Yes, the spell, the one the witch in my English class cast on me. Why did she turn me into a beast who hides by day and prowls by night? I’ll tell you. I’ll tell you how I used to be Kyle Kingsbury, the guy you wished you were, with money, perfect looks, and a perfect life. And then, I’ll tell you how I became perfectly beastly.

REVIEW: A beautiful, intriguing, and interesting rendition of Beauty and the Beast. Most people know I love fairy tales. And Beauty and the Beast has always been one of my favorites, so when my friend forced her copy of Beastly on me, I was surprised I hadn’t seen this book before. I started reading it immediately. At first I hated the MC Kyle. He was exactly the kind of boy I hated in H.S. I honestly had to force myself to keep reading because I disliked him that much. But, as we all do, I knew where the story was going and I knew he’d change and I’d like him. Or at least I hoped I would. And I did. By the end of the story, I was absolutely in love with him.

This is one of the reasons for the five-feather rating. To make me hate a character so much and then do a complete turn around to say that I felt sorry for him and loved him, means Alex did a spectacular job of characterization.

It was really great, also, how Alex used an IM support group to bring in other fairy tales and tell their story.

I also like how she explained why Beast was left all alone to molder away in some abandoned “castle.” While it made me angry that was the reason, it also made complete sense.

She also incorporated several of my favorite things from the Disney version. The enchanted rose, magic mirror, and, of course, the heroine’s love of books.

Honestly, I have nothing but gushings for this particular book. I couldn’t think of something I didn’t like if I tried, and I have. It was the perfect combination of fairy tale meets modern world.

Characters: Kyle is perfectly abominable in the beginning. Like I already said, I hated him. He really thought he was God’s gift to the world, and I was sickly happy that I knew what was coming. LOL. I can’t describe any of the others w/o giving away spoilers, so I’ll just say that they were all as well drawn as Kyle was.

Cover: I like it. I’m not absolutely in love with it, but it’s simple and shows an important part of the story, so I know why they used it.

This is a great book for both lovers of fairy tales and those sick of the overly sweet Disney versions. It even has great boy appeal, and not just because a boy is the narrator, but because of Kyle himself. I think a lot of boys would be able to see themselves as Kyle. In fact, I’m thinking of handing this over to my son to read, when I can force myself to give it up. : ) It really is a perfect blend of classic fairy tale and the modern world, and is a great addition to any one’s library.

Teaser Tuesday

Well, since agent Jennifer Laughran's wonderful post last week, I've taken off all my teasers and snippets from my blog regarding my current story.

So, instead, I've decided to post a teaser of the book I'm going to review on Wednesday. Nothing long and nothing with spoilers. I think I'm even going to hold a contest or two for people who can guess what the teaser is from before I post the review. Just not today. LOL. But I'd still love to hear your guesses and what you think about that teaser. It's also a good excersice for writers. Because you can tell me why it did or didn't make you want to read more.

So, without further adieu, today's teaser:

I could feel everyone looking at me, but I was used to it. One thing my dad taught me early and often was to act like nothing moved me. When you're special, like we were, people were bound to notice.

So...can you guess what book this comes from? And, even if you can't, would you have kept reading? Why? Or why not?

Monday Mullings

Wow. Has it really been almost a month since I last posted? Life sure has been interesting at Clan Souders. Between revisions, sicknesses, ARCs, and my TBR pile, I haven't really had much time for this here blog. But since things are calming down a little, I've decided to get back into blogging. And I figured I'd start with something that has recently become quite controversial: whether or not authors (aspiring and otherwise) should write book reviews.

As you know, or should know, I do write book reviews, but only for the books I really, really enjoyed. But others have told me, that I shouldn't do that. I should post reviews of all the books I read. Whether or not I enjoyed them. However, last week on twitter, agents and authors were talking about how authors shouldn't post bad reviews because it could lead to professional problems in the future.

Which, as I thought about it, made sense. Say I write a bad review for a book. Let's use Across the Universe because it's HUGE right now and will emphasize my point better (No, I have NOT read it yet, but it's sitting on my dresser waiting to be read, and I LOVED the 1st chapter, so I'm not saying that I didn't like the book). Now, my agent is going to be subbing MY story out there soon, and it's in a similar vein. The editors go and research my name and then stumble upon my review of ATU. They LOVED that book. Do you think they're going to want to read mine now? Especially since I've basically told them we don't have the same taste in books by my review? Nope, probably not. They're going to send a polite rejection and move to the next on the list.

Let's go even further and say I get lucky and an editor purchases my story. Now I need blurbs, right? So, since ATU is so big and is similar, I ask Beth Revis to read and blurb my story. Do you really think she's going to want to read my story and do me any favors after I just trashed her book to all my blog readers, essentially telling them not to read it? Nope. I wouldn't if I was her. Not because I'm vindictive, but because, well, I'm probably just not that nice.

So, that leaves me with what I'm doing. Writing reviews on books I really enjoy. Some people say this is dishonest reviewing. That I'm not really providing my audience with the full spectrum. That I HAVE to review the good books along with the bad (IMO), so my readers can trust my opinion.

I can see their point, too. So, that leaves me with NOT reviewing books I'm extremely passionate about. That I can't write reviews for books I've read and pass along the word that I think my readers will enjoy them, too. To share how excited I am about these books, all because it's not honest. But by putting honest reviews of all the books I read up, I could be stabbing myself in the foot. And that brings me to the crux of my problem.

Do I continue what I'm doing and keep reviewing books I enjoy, even though some consider it dishonest? Or do I throw the baby out with the bathwater and do away with reviews all together?

So...what do you think? Should authors also be book reviewers? Or just be authors?

Last official post of 2010

And so now we've come to the last official post of my first full year blogging! I had so much fun doing this and I hope that you guys did too and that maybe you learned something you didn't know before.

I met two of the three goals I had for 2010 and I think that's pretty darned good! In case you were wondering, my goals were to write 2 books, acquire an agent, and to have a publishing contract. Well, I wrote 2 books, started 2 others, finished a short story, and, of course, found my perfect agent. Came pretty darned close to having a publishing contract, so...I guess it's really 2 1/2 out of 3 goals. :D

This year I have some more writerly goals and I've decided to share them in the hopes it'll help me get them in the coming year!

1) I want to write 3 books (finishing books from last year is fine) and 2 short stories

2) I want to have one short story accepted somewhere

3) I want to have a publishing contract

4) I want to attend at least 1 writer's conference.

As you can see, I've upped the ante a bit there from what I accomplished this year. I think it can be done. Though, arguably 2 of those goals are out of my hands. So, those are the ones that I'm most worried about.

So, let's hear it. What are your goals this year?

Tip Thursday: Advice: Sorting the wheat from the chaff

Normally I'm all about providing you with tips that helped me on my journey to get published (even if I'm not quite there yet), then I stumbled across a blog today that got my hackles up. I won't post a link to the blog, or give specifics, but here was this person, spreading his "advice" like it was gospel around the interwebs and from my experience at least three-quarters of it was wrong.

Then it got me thinking, don't I spew advice every week and isn't my experience different from everyone else's. Who's to say my advice is better than any one else's. And to honestly answer that question, I'd have to say no, it's not. But, and this is the theme for today's writing, I only post advice that has worked for me, or other (smarter than me) people have said.

So, since the Internet is so large and any monkey with a keyboard (including myself. :) ) can blog, how do we determine what's good advice and what isn't in regards to publishing? Here are my "rules" to what advice I take and what I don't.

1. Money flows TO the author: If a blog or person suggests anything that will COST you money (beside postage or paper or something), then you need to tread with caution. For instance, the blog I ran into actually suggested hiring a freelance editor before sending your work to agents/publishers. While not necessarily a to-don't it's definetely not a hard and fast rule that you have to or even that you should. In fact, in my opinion, while an editor can be helpful, it's necessary to know how to edit your own work. Agent, Rachel Gardner, says:

Many agents and editors are uncomfortable with writers having too much outside editorial help prior to being contracted, because it can mask a writer's true abilities. I'd hate to get you a 3-book contract with a publisher based on that stellar first book, only to find out that you had a ton of help with it and are not able to deliver that quality of book a second time.

2. Always check credentials: Take in mind who and where that person is in publishing. Advice from an editor at one of the big 5 is going to be different than a free lance editor who edits for aspiring authors. Agent advice is going to be different than an author. And a veteran author's advice is going to be different than a newbie. While each of these people can have great advice, personally I'd listen to those "in the know" before someone who doesn't have the experience yet. (And yes, I'm including myself in this. If you read an article by say my agent, disagreeing with everything I'm saying, than please, feel free to ignore me. :) However, most of my advice comes from hearing it over and over again from those professionals, so I'm pretty sure I'm safe in saying she won't disagree with me. :D Which brings me to my next point. )

3. Where have I heard this before? How many times have you heard/seen this advice? If you've never heard it before, chances are you can disregard it if you disagree. If you've heard it a LOT, then you probably want to do some more research on why they've said it, then chose at that point to disregard or not. Who the advice giver is important here because sometimes you have herd mentality, where one person says something and a lot of yes men will agree. It doesn't mean it's the truth.

4. Beware the agenda. Be sure to read between the lines and see why a person is saying a particular thing. If a person is saying all aspiring authors should hire a freelance editor and they're a freelance editor, then you might want to check in a few other places to make sure.

5. What time is it anyway? Make sure to check when something was said. For such a slow industry, the rules change quickly. Something said ten years ago may not be relevant today.

And lastly because this post could really go on forever, beware anyone tells you to "lower your expectations." Publishing is hard enough to keep your motivation up without someone telling you that. Granted you need to make sure your expectations are realistic, not everyone is like Stephenie Meyer. (See my post here.) But there's no reason not to shoot for the stars. Publishing is one of those quirky businesses where anything is possible.

Anyway, there's a ton more things, but if you take all advice with a grain of salt and use common sense, you should be all right.

Writer's Wednesday: Results and guest post

Tip Thursday: Tips and Tricks for Beginning Writers

When I was first beginning to write, I honestly had no clue what I was doing. I figured, since I loved reading, writing would come naturally. Which, for the most part it did, but not all of it, and when I hit a block, I didn't know how to fix it. So, here's a few tips I found that have been beneficial to me, so I'm passing them along. Tips and tricks for beginners
Do some short exercises to stretch your writing muscles – if you’re short of ideas, read the Daily Writing Tips article on “Writing Bursts”. Many new creative writers find that doing the washing up or weeding the garden suddenly looks appealing, compared to the effort of sitting down and putting words onto the page. Force yourself to get through these early doubts, and it really will get easier. Try to get into the habit of writing every day, even if it’s just for ten minutes.

If you’re stuck for ideas, carry a notebook everywhere and write down your observations. You’ll get some great lines of dialogue by keeping your ears open on the bus or in cafes, and an unusual phrase may be prompted by something you see or smell.

Work out the time of day when you’re at your most creative. For many writers, this is first thing in the morning – before all the demands of the day jostle for attention. Others write well late at night, after the rest of the family have gone to bed. Don’t be afraid to experiment!

Don’t agonize over getting it right. All writers have to revise and edit their work – it’s rare that a story, scene or even a sentence comes out perfectly the first time. Once you’ve completed the initial draft, leave the piece for a few days – then come back to it fresh, with a red pen in hand. If you know there are problems with your story but can’t pinpoint them, ask a fellow writer to read through it and give feedback.

HAVE FUN! Sometimes, we writers can end up feeling that our writing is a chore, something that “must” be done, or something to procrastinate over for as long as possible. If your plot seems wildly far-fetched, your characters bore you to tears and you’re convinced that a five-year old with a crayon could write better prose … take a break. Start a completely new project, something which is purely for fun. Write a poem or a 60-word “mini saga”. Just completing a small finished piece can help if you’re bogged down in a longer story.

REVIEW: I’m a little late on getting this review out. Unfortunately. I originally read it when it first came out, but never got around to reviewing it.

I feel like I'm repeating myself over and over again. This was another book that I loved. I read it for 4 hours straight today. I'm not generally a reader of Christian fiction, but this blew away every thought I had about the genre and I really can't wait to own my next Jody Hedlund. And to find out that the story was based on a true one, made it even better.

It starts with the main character, Elizabeth, hearing a baby cry as the town, including the child’s father, tried to help the mother of the babe as she died. It bothers Elizabeth and she tries repeadetly to care for it, but an elder woman (an important figure head of the town) refuses to let her. Elizabeth decides to take things into her own hands and goes to the poor section to go get a nursemaid for him, even though she knows she’ll get in trouble for it, which of course makes the other woman incredibly angry and will come back to haunt Elizabeth later.

Because of this she ends up becoming the housekeeper for the now widowed, John—a radical but highly regarded preacher in this town--and cares for his house and his three other children, including the eldest, a blind child named Mary.

Almost right away we’re tossed into a political and religious war when an enemy of John’s threatens to spread lies about John and Elizabeth, which quickly escalates into brutal beatings and vicious murders.

CHARACTERS: Ms. Hedlund's characterizations were superb and I truly felt I was apart of the story and felt for the characters, especially for poor Elizabeth and everything she endures during the course of this story. Elizabeth is an extremely likeable character with her quiet strength, confidence, and ability to adapt to any situation. Even when she made choices I wouldn’t have, I couldn’t help but see why she chose that path. John, was another good character. Even if there were times he wasn’t very likeable, it was always very obvious why he made those choices.

COVER: I think it’s perfect for this book. It gives the perfect hint that it’s historical and shows that quiet strength that Elizabeth embodies for the entire story.

This is truly a book you can't put down once you start reading it and I will be suggesting this book to every one I know.

Agents: Gatekeepers or Champions?

Agents always get a bad rap when it comes to writers, especially those of us who’ve suffered through a butt load of rejections. Agents are too picky…They only want bestsellers…they’re only out for money…

And, well, it’s more than likely true. It IS their JOB after all. They only make money when their author’s make money, so it pays to be picky who they pick up, and if the author turns out to be a bestseller, even better! But there’s no guarantee that the book an agent signs will sell, let only become a bestseller, so…yeah…not really a valid argument to not have an agent…

Anyway, that’s not really why I decided to write a post.

It’s actually because of this. I’m not going to go into details, but if you read the post, you’ll get an eyeful.

The reason I’m writing, is that this is a classic example why getting an agent or having a literary attorney look over your contract before you sign it is a good idea.

Agents are more than gatekeepers. They’re your champion. They’ll make sure your book finds the perfect home. Which publishers are looking for your kind of book, which editors you’ll work well with, and what publishers to avoid. They’ll negotiate a contract that’s in YOUR best interest and if the worst happens and something happens with your publisher, they’ll help you figure a way out of the mess. They’ve “got your back” so to speak. Because they want you, generally, for your entire career. Again that whole if-you-don’t-make-money-neither-do-they thing.

If you absolutely don’t want an agent, you absolutely NEED to hire a literary attorney to look over those contracts. Just because a “publisher” claims their contract is author friendly, doesn’t mean it is. In fact, it may be downright predatory. And a literary attorney is going to be able to spot the nuances that a normal contracts attorney isn’t going to be able to see.

Now, I’m not saying the most commercial publishers are bad. If you’ve done your research, then chances are you’re not going to run into a vanity press in disguise, but there are enough scam publishers out there, that you really need to be careful.

So, in my opinion, it’s just easier to find an agent who will walk with you through every step of the process. Who will listen to your gripes, help you brainstorm new book ideas and generally help guide your career down the path you want to take.

I started watching them with my son when he was 2 and even when he outgrew them, I kept the DVDs so I could watch them in secret. Now I watch them with my daughter. My favorite part of Veggie Tales is their songs and they've even spread out to making Christmas Songs.

Tip Thursday: Passive vs Active Voice

On another of my posts, I've had some social commentary from a reader who corrected me on something I said to another commenter about passive vs active voice. Ultimately she was correct, what I'd originally said was active was, in fact, not active voice. However, I disagreed with the example she used to demonstrate her point, as it didn't use the original examples and confused other readers who emailed me to ask what in the heck she was talking about. :) So I decided to do a post on passive vs active voice.

In my search for references, I went to my trusty grammar divas who already covered this topic. Since they said it better than I could, I'm just going to copy and paste it below, with a few more links to places that have posted on this.

Passive voice is one of the most difficult grammar issues fiction writers struggle with every day. It’s the redheaded stepchild because it’s awkward, wordy, and generally vague. Active voice tends to be crisp and direct. Ergo, to ensure your readers understand what you’re trying to say and enjoy doing so, active voice is your best bet.

You’d think knowing what voice to use would be easy because there are only two: active and passive. However, many a writer has ground teeth, pulled hair, and/or stomped feet trying to rewrite a sentence into active voice that his or her editor or critique partner has marked as “passive”.

The voice of a verb shows the strength of the subject of the sentence. Not physical strength, perception strength. Editors feel active voice is more direct, dynamic, and—literally and figuratively—active because attention is directed at the “doer” of the action. Passive is, well, too passive for most commercial fiction.

In the active voice, the subject of the sentence takes the action of the verb, i.e., is the actual “doer” of the action. Let’s use a familiar joke to explain.

Why did the chicken cross the road?

The chicken is the subject of the sentence, i.e., the doer of the action. This is active voice.

Why was the road crossed by the chicken?

Here, the chicken is the doer of the action, but not the subject of the sentence. The subject of the sentence is the road and is receiving the action. This is passive voice.
Now, let’s illustrate the difference using sentences a reader might find in commercial fiction.

Active voice is when the subject of the sentence takes the action of the verb, i.e., is the actual “doer” of the action.

John threw the ball across the road.

The spider bit Samuel under his swimsuit.

Passive voice is when the subject of the sentence is acted upon.

The ball was thrown by John across the road.

Samuel was bitten under his swimsuit by the spider.

Passive voice is not any use of to be (in any form). The key to identification is:

Must Have #1: form of “to be” + past participle = passive voice. (Does past participle sound like the latest energy drink? Think a verb form ending in –ed that expresses completed action. Of course, there are a few exceptions like paid, thrown, bitten, and driven.)

Must Have #2: A receiver of the action (a direct object) that is the subject of the sentence.

May Have #3: The doer of the action is in a prepositional phrase that begins with by or sometimes for. Why may have?

A body was found last night. = passive voice

Not all passive voice sentences contain by or for.

The prince’s generosity surprised Summer. = active voice

Summer was surprised by the prince’s generosity. = passive voice

Adrianne’s coming-out party was a blast. = active voice

Adrianne’s coming-out party was held by her parents. = passive voice

Tired of editors, contest judges, and/or critique partners circling every was and marking it passive? What they forget is that only transitive verbs (those taking objects) have a passive voice form.

John threw the ball across the road. = active voice

The ball was thrown by John across the road. = passive voice

However, linking verbs (not helping forms) only suggest state of being and can’t have a passive voice form—though some people interpret a state of being as a passive form. Well, maybe, but it’s not a grammatical VOICE form.

John was a teacher. = active voice

The teacher was John. = active voice

Confused? Remember, a linking verb does not show action. It connects a word or words in the predicate (the verb and any objects, modifiers, or complements associated with the verb) to the subject in the sentence. Forms of to be (am, are, is, was, were) are common linking verbs. Others include grow, look, became, appear, look, taste, and remain. Because linking verbs don’t show action, they can’t be active or passive.

Why is avoiding passive voice so important? Passive voice is a grammar issue the fiction writing community—especially within the romance genre—takes seriously. Passive voice is not grammatically wrong, but most editors feel active voice is more direct, dynamic, and—literally and figuratively—active because attention is directed at the doer of the action. They see passive voice as passive writing bleeding onto the page. They see an author unwilling to grab a hold of their prose and commit to producing strong, aggressive writing.

Passive voice can also drive a reader insane with its contorted, artificial structure. And we don’t want to drive our readers crazy, do we?

How to Fix Passive Voice
It’s easy. Simply switch the sentence order to make the doer and the subject one.

The tablecloths were discarded after the party by Cheri.

Remember, in passive voice the subject of the sentence receives the action, not the actual “doer” of the action. Here, the subject of the sentence—the tablecloths—receives the action—were discarded. Who’s the actual “doer” of the action? Cheri.

Cheri discarded the tablecloths after the party.

OR

After the party, Cheri discarded the tablecloths.

That’s better.

Jackson was wanted by every woman in the bar.

Subject of the sentence? Jackson. What’s the action? Wanted. Actual “doer” of the action?

Every woman in the bar. Ready? Switch!

Every woman in the bar wanted Jackson.

That’s better.

Is Passive Voice Ever Okie-Dokie?

Sometimes the object of the action is the important thing, not the doer. Here, passive voice is the better way to go.

That maniac turned Mysia’s car upside down on Tuesday. = active voice

On Tuesday, Mysia’s car was turned upside down by that maniac. = passive voice

Sometimes you have a sentence with two clauses. Here, passive voice creates a shift in subject that makes the sentence flow.

As the Laird surveyed his lands, his enemies plotted treachery. = active voice

As the Laird surveyed his lands, treachery was plotted by his enemies. = passive voice

Sometimes the doer of the action is unknown and therefore we must use passive or rewrite the sentence.

Burglars stole the jewels last night. = active voice

The jewels were stolen last night. = passive voice

Sometimes the detachment between the subject of the sentence and the doer of the action works for stronger prose.

“He’s round sunburned face was marked by a certain watchful innocence.” Reflections in a Golden Eye, Carson McCullers.

Here, the emphasis is on innocence. Rewriting the sentence into active voice would ruin the author’s intent.

“You can be defeated and disoriented by all these feelings.” Bird by Bird, Anne Lamott.

Here, the emphasis is on you. A rewrite would kill Anne’s masterpiece.

“The body lay on the back, the head toward the door. A candlestick was yet clutched in the right hand.” Wilderness, Robert Penn Warren.

The last sentence, in passive voice, delivers a dramatic punch.

Jane was taken to the cleaners.

Idiomatic phrases allow us some liberties. Not many editors would poo-poo a sentence like this one.

What About Passive Voice in Dialogue?

That’s between you and your character. If active voice suits the speaking style you’ve created for a character, go active voice. If you need to show a character’s indecision, hesitation, or discomfort, go with passive voice. Just remember to distinguish character indecision or hesitation from author indecision or hesitation.

Final Tips on Passive Voice

1) Write the way you speak and your writing will be more lively, powerful, and engaging than writing the way you think writing should sound.

2) Still not sure whether to go passive voice or active voice?

3) Try both and decide what sounds smoother.

4)Still, still not sure? When in doubt, go active voice.

5) Don’t worry about passive voice until you’re in the editing stage of your manuscript!

Remember, write first; edit later.

Writer's Wednesday: Book Review Paranormalcy

Evie’s always thought of herself as a normal teenager, even though she works for the International Paranormal Containment Agency, her ex-boyfriend is a faerie, she’s falling for a shape-shifter, and she’s the only person who can see through paranormals’ glamours.
But Evie’s about to realize that she may very well be at the center of a dark faerie prophecy promising destruction to all paranormal creatures.

So much for normal.

REVIEW: This is another book that I picked up mainly because of the cover (it’s so PRETTY!), but also because of a the hoopla surrounding it. I first learned of it during my own agent hunt last year when I was researching her agent, Michelle Wolfson. And Kiersten did a blog post on how her first book didn’t sell. After that I started ~~stalking~~ following her. ☺

The story is a little slower than I would have liked, but I did enjoy it. And I have to admit the romance wasn’t at all what I had expected (from other reviews I’d read), but there is some there. Other than those things I didn’t really have any expectations for it. I was hoping it would keep me entertained and it did.

It starts off with Evie, who carries a pink tazer she calls tazie (isn’t that cute?!), being “attacked” by a vampire. Pretty typical of the recent paranormal stories, but then Evie completely kicks butt and turns the tables on him so she can put some kind of ankle bracelet that acts like those police trackers, but instead of tracking them, it monitors their “vital signs” and if they break the law they are “neutered,” which, has a more literal meaning later in the book, but in the beginning it just means depending on the creature, they are killed.

We then follow Evie as she’s transported back to IPCA, where she works because of her ability to see through glamours and see the paranormal creatures for what they are, by a faerie, Rath, who Evie has a strange romantic history with and plays a fairly large part in the story as he puts Evie in an unwilling love triangle. We also meet her best friend, who happens to be a mermaid who lives in a tank in IPCA and talks to Evie through a computer and eye movements.

Then we meet the hero, a shapeshifter named Lend, who borrows the “skin” of several of IPCA’s staff to break in. Evie puts a stop to it and attaches the ankle tracker. She develops a friendship, then later a romantic involvement with him and learns a prophecy about herself. Throughout the rest of the book Evie’s internal conflict is between her duties and the want and need to be a normal teenage girl where she goes to high school and has a locker—which she’s apparently quite fond of. ☺ ( Having once been a normal teenage girl, I don’t see why, but I guess if I remember wanting to ride the bus to school when I was younger and I suppose it’s about the same feeling. :D)

I have to admit, that the major appeal of this book for me was its uniqueness. It wasn’t just like every other paranormal out there and kept me reading because I wasn’t sure what was going to happen next. I highly suggest it if you’re looking for a good read that’s different than what you’re expecting.

CHARACTERS: Evie is a strong character, but is made stronger by her weaknesses. Her longing to be normal is something that every person who remembers high school can relate to. Lend is sweet and while he pretends to be strong around the adults, through Evie you can glimpse some of that naïveté that makes him the perfect hero and perfect for Evie. Reth on the other hand, even though I’m seeing him through Evie is not a character I liked. Although, I’m pretty sure this was Ms. White’s intention. He was selfish, uncaring, and cruel. While I could see sparks of why people may like him, I just couldn’t get past all his negatives to like him.

COVER: I think it’s perfect for this book. With the beautiful pink dress on the kick-butt beautiful girl and, the storm brewing in the background, sets the mood of the story wonderfully.

If you’re looking for a unique story, that’ll keep you reading and has a hint of romance that’s perfect for almost all ages, then this is the perfect book for you.

Music Monday: Holiday Tunes!

I chose this song since this is what I've felt like lately. I didn't even post anything last week, because I just didn't think I could write a post without ranting.

Everywhere I go people are just so rude! I couldn't believe it last week when I was completely treated like crap at the post office. And I was told, "You wouldn't want to work at the post office during the Holidays. Give the lady a break," by a guy a few people behind me, when the post office worker completely ignored me and called the person behind me in line and I called her out on it. I told him that just because it was the holidays didn't mean you STOP giving excellent customer service. To my surprise, I was the bad guy because I didn't take the worker's crap!

Even putting lights up was a Herculean task that required entirely TOO much time and money. First 3 strands of lights were completely dead. And I had to buy all new ones. And, of course, the strings I bought last year are longer than the strings I bought this year, so I had to make ANOTHER trip to get 2 MORE strings. Then the Christmas tree I had for 11 years finally gave up the ghost and I had to buy a new one, which meant ANOTHER trip to the store because I bought a bigger tree and needed MORE lights, ornaments, and garland.

On top of all this, my daughter decided that since mommy was stressed out already, then would be the PERFECT time to act like a hooligan! So...now it's a new week, that started out with a BANG on Saturday with DH's birthday. We went out to his friend's house and spent about 4 hours shooting targets for his birthday. Then Sunday we went to Kobe's Japanese Steakhouse for his boss's birthday and had so much fun. So I'm hoping that this week will be better than last and this song is to symbolize the OFFICIAL ( ;) ) start of the holidays.
